Erika Baikoff, a 29-year-old soprano from Brooklyn, NY, has won the 51st George and Nora London Foundation Competition for young American and Canadian opera singers, the New York Daily News reports.
The competition, now in its 51st year, is open to singers between the ages of 18 and 29.
According to a press release, Baikoff won the George London Award in memory of Mary Palumbo.
She also won the George London Award in memory of Kirsten Flagstad, the George London Award in memory of Leonie Rysanek, the George London Award in memory of Norma Newton, the George London Award in memory of Robert Lombardo, and the George London Award in memory of Louis D'Angelo.
The other winners were soprano Harolyn Blackwell, mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer, mezzo-soprano Susan Quittmeyer, bass James Morris, and former Metropolitan Opera administrator Lenore Rosenberg.
